Overnight Phenomenon for a donut shop

Social Media for small business is thriving. If you still think it’s a waste, there’s something incredible that happened this weekend for a local donut shop in Texas that might help you see otherwise.
On March 9th, a tweet was sent which said “My dad is sad cause no one is coming to his new donut shop 😭”. It was short, simple and right to the point— and had a gallery of 4 images, all of which were low quality, showing an empty store. The tweet picked up decent traction throughout the weekend and eventually led to Twitter’s official account RTing it. This led to a wave of people sharing it which eventually drove the shop to sell out of donuts. It also led to the business building a huge fan base.
This surge in growth is what fascinated me the most. There was a trickledown effect that led to a number of people following the donut shops’ Instagram. A screenshot of the IG account was shared when the tweet initially launched and showed 71 followers— and they didn’t even include a link. Over 55K PEOPLE opened up IG & manually typed in this donut shop over the last 2 days to follow this account. I’m big on user experience but this shows that people are willing to get behind something and will go out of their way to do so.
I’ve heard it so many times in my life that social media is a waste of time for small business. So please—enlighten and tell me how it’s a waste of time had this donut shop been your business.
