Instagram Pod Groups - Yay or nay?

I've heard reviews split right down the middle about how these work. I have a mid to low size page in my niche (5.5k followers) and my engagement is 3-4% on average. I was recently invited to join a pod where everyone shares their handles at periods throughout the day and then like everyone else who shared their handle's most recent post.
I know that the likes mean nothing in terms of followers, but wouldn't it help your odds of getting on the Discover page for certain hashtags and therefore finding more real followers of people involved in your niche? I'm not sure I see the downside, but if someone can enlighten me that would be great.
