Snapchat friend query

So I had this friend on snap chat who I would talk to about once a week. 3 weeks after a long conversation they stopped responding to my messages and the last snap I sent was left unopened.
A few days later I went back into snapchat and their name (let’s call them John Smith) turned from being displayed as John Smith to their snapchat username (the one you use to add them).
I tried sending them a snap but their name didn’t appear in the list of people to send it to and when I swipe left on their name to chat message them nothing happens
I tried holding onto their name and it came up as us having no chat score and the +add button next to it. When I click this button it loads for a split second and then reappears and doesn’t add them
Have they blocked me? Have they deleted their account? What has happened?
