Thinking out loud

I would like to know if the utility of social media is delivered only to people who carefully curate their feeds by strictly following only relevant accounts or can one depend on the algorithm (be it Twitter's, FB's or IG's) to atleast over time figure out what one finds useful and build a useful feed on its own?
The reason I ask this question is because recently I created a second Gmail account in order to create a new social media account on various platforms- and on these new accounts I was asked to follow by default, basically famous celebrities and a few big politicians- people who had a made a name off the platform- but no mention of any user who had actually created value on the platform itself( For example - Had I selected sports as an interest- rather than Cristiano Ronaldo is it not more useful to follow Athletic Interest which is a brilliant account to follow for anyone interested in sports).
Also if the default accounts are followed won't it mean that the starting input for the algorithm will be sensationalised content , which will inturn bring more sensationalised content?!
