Tagging competing companies

I’ve searched for this in the posts but didn’t see anything.
New to instagram both personally and for our business.
I’ve noticed in the Instagram ‘tagged’ photos a local company is posting content and tagging other local companies, including ours, hidden inside their images.
This method obviously increases their reach and exposure but does this do anything for us in return except clog up our tagged view with content that’s not relevant to us and somewhat competitive to us (they are a restaurant and we have a hotel with restaurant).
Questions I’m thinking about...
Is this acceptable practice and should we be doing the same and tagging other companies?
If not beneficial for us to be tagged, should we untag ourselves?
