Being an average user of Twitter in 2020

As someone who has only used Twitter sparingly, I find it difficult to participate in that platform now in 2020. It seems tweeting is only useful if you are famous or have content to promote elsewhere (like a journalist, or someone who runs a web site).
What can I get from being an average user on Twitter in 2020? Social media gurus argue that Twitter is like the biggest discussion online, but I find people that I reply to or tweet to rarely respond. Truthfully, I find Reddit to be far better for genuine discussion that will provoke thoughtful responses, perhaps because Reddit feels like less of a self-promotion tool other than Twitter.
I tried creating lists on Twitter of users based around things I'm interested in, like a basketball list for Twitter accounts associated with basketball, or a video games list for people associated with video games. But I find this has limited use, as I end up getting a lot of that information from reddit or traditional news sources before I even get on Twitter. Twitter also has a lot of noise, meaning I can add a couple of dozen accounts to a basketball list, but a lot of those people might be tweeting about a new video game release, or something that happened in politics, whereas Reddit is better for focusing on a particular topic without that kind of noise.
I feel like unless you are tweeting about American politics, or unless you are famous or at least work in a job where you did to do regular self promotion on the internet, Twitter is useless. I have no family, friends, or colleagues who use Twitter, as it seems to be strictly a tool for self promotion.
Am I misunderstanding the platform? Everything Twitter allegedly does well seems to be done better by other social media platforms (and this is without getting into a comparison of Twitter with Facebook or Instagram).
What do you use Twitter for these days?
