Can I improve instagram engagement by removing ghost followers

I must admit, the engagement on my page has fallen dramatically, and I think its due to ghost followers. If my post is shown to these ghost followers, they obviously wont engage, which means that the instagram algorithm wont show my posts to my other followers, giving me a low reach and low engagement levels. Would it actually work to get rid of ghost followers in this case?
