Facebook allows you to ‘verify’ your profile - where are we headed with the elusive blue ticks?

On a social media managers group on Facebook, I saw a user had a verified/blue ticked account. After a bit of digital detective work, I learned Facebook is now allowing users (as well as pages) to request verification.
I did apply, and was instantly rejected - I was slightly bummed because I’ve done credited photography jobs for mainstream national media outlets, and work in media (PR), so have done some on-air interviews on behalf of organisations etc. I was told to work on my public profile (?) and re-apply in 30 days.
But, I’ll leave my slight bitterness aside, and raise the question of if we’re going to see organisations move to a compulsory opt-in verification. I used Bumble Friends in 2018 and found a tick next to my picture after submitting a photo of my passport.
Twitter still states is working on a new verification process, but there have been talks on the ‘everyone is verified’ approach.
Verification is still, in my opinion, wrapped up with bragging rights and really a ego-booster rather than an essential of social media. But I’d like to get others’ thoughts and opinions on where this is heading.
