SNAPCHAT: Question about pending chat

So I added this person on Snapchat, sent them a message and it went through fine (The red delivered arrow like normal) , They replied and I went to send them a message back and its now a grey arrow saying "Pending" and in the chat it says "Your snaps and chats will be pending until NAME adds you as a friend"
So why all of a sudden does it say pending now when before it delivered fine? And will I still come up on that persons snapchat so they can read what I said?
