Is direct messaging a must-have for social media applications, in your opinion?

We have developed a new social media application that is nearly complete. The specifics aren't ready to be revealed yet but the app and network themselves have been designed to fix some glaring issues with current social media sites. One example, is that we have created a design that essentially eliminates trolling. In other words, it's not just that trolling is disallowed, but rather the actions that users can engage in are a bit more limited such that trolling will be a non-issue.
We're suddenly doing a bit of second guessing though and wondering if a lack of direct messaging in our application will not be appreciated by users but rather just seen as a key feature that is absent. The essence of the app is that it encourages you to share content publicly but also keep other users at arm's length. So we haven't implemented DMs because that sort of violates one of our original principles where users can maintain some level of privacy and detachment from other users.
What are your thoughts on direct messaging, and would you welcome or probably dislike a social media app that was released without it?
