Is social media brainwashing us?

I'll admit that I am addicted to social media (preferably Instagram), but after reading through comments from fitness pages, and various media pages. Is it safe to assume that we are being brainwashed and consumed by what seems to be a popularity contest?
I mean everyone wants to be the person with 20k followers, the person doing stupid stunts for ig, the king/queen of comedy, etc.
