If im researching a niche in social media, should I only look at the posts that have the most likes, things that have the most views etc... and get data from there?

Im practicing a lot this market research thing and im afraid that I may waste time looking in the wrong places. Heres the tasks that I have tell me if i would be wasting time or not.
- Write 5 possible subniches that need my product.
- Look at 5 places about that subniche.
- Find top posts, comments, questions and learn from that about the people in the niche.
- Find 10 people on each site that have top posts or comments and talk to them to get data i need about the audience and the need for my product.
- When I have more clarity I will start looking what doesn't work to get data from there.
It's that right? am I doing it efficiently and effectively? if not tell me what should I do to be more efficient and effective.
