Hashtags on Instagram story posts.

I just heard about using hashtags for stories and then making them really small but they still appear in recent hashtags section.
The problem is that whenever I do it, they NEVER show up. I’m not using competitive hashtags either. These are very niche.
I’m clicking the A in the top right of the story screen and then typing out my hashtags. Seems simple but it just isn’t showing up so it seems pointless.
What am I doing wrong?
