Promotion of Sports website through social media

Hello, all.
I've been reading through the thread and finding out some really good tips and tricks.
My question is in regards to a Football (Soccer) website that I work with. While the content of our website and social media platforms is good (I feel) we seem to be stagnating in terms of organic growth. Simply put, the information is not reaching enough people.
I have tried to analyze the patterns on each platform and peak at what other, more successful sites are doing. Our content is similar to those in both terms of quality and volume. That's my personal opinion, at least.
Clearly, we are missing an element here. What do you think we may be doing wrong, or, simply not doing?
