When it was announced that celebrities attending the 2018 Golden Globes, would wear black to show their support for victims of sexual harassment in the workplace, you can’t blame viewers for wondering if it would be a more serious affair. On the contrary, there was joyfulness to the evening that prompted Glow actress, Alison Brie to comment on the red carpet that, “black can be a sombre colour, but the feeling here tonight is so celebratory; it’s so empowering.”
And that celebratory feeling was helped by more than $20 million dollars worth of watches and jewellery that floated down the runway in pendants, earrings and even lapel pins. Rapper turned actor Common was seen in the prettiest Tiffany Enchant dragonfly brooch in platinum with rubies and diamonds (valued at $5,200) in his left lapel.
If ever there was a fashion breakout star for the night it had to be Ladybird star Saoirse Ronan who wowed in an Atelier Versace dress she paired with long blue sapphire drop earrings from Cartier. Other stars that added colour to black via OTT jewels were Mandy Moore in red, pink, and violet drop earrings from Irene Neuwirth. Presenter Salma Hayek Pinault who wrote a personal account of her victimization at the hands of Harvey Weinstein for the New York Times, wore yellow and white diamonds from Harry Winston valued at worth more than $5 million.
But playing Trend Detective is what we do so we must comment on the fact that many stars wore green jewellery, in particular emeralds on the red carpet. From Insecure’s Issa Rae to Catherine Zeta Jones and even Ricky Martin wore a chunky green ring you wouldn’t want to face in a bar brawl, from Wilfredo Rosado. Green was the prominent gem stone colour at this heartfelt Golden Globes.
How appropriate when one thinks of the healing properties associated with the emerald and its green hue. According to Crystal Vaults, an emerald can help to heal heartbreak and “give the strength needed to overcome the misfortunes of life while clearing away negative patterns of victimization and loss.” As they say, time’s up.
