(Instagram) Do I have to post pictures of my face to gain higher engagement?

I have an Instagram account where I share my German grammar notes with 16.3k followers but currently experiencing a very low number of likes (averages 400-500) and comments.
I always believe in producing good content so I spend a lot of time writing my notes and I believe they are valuable to German learners but my numbers have been stagnant for about 6 months now. I haven’t been growing much, partly due to one month break I took last month. I have started posting again regularly for two weeks now.
All this while, even prior to my short break, my engagement has always been very low despite all my efforts (replying everyday single DM/comment, stories with questions/quizzes..., commenting on others’ posts, asking questions in my captions that no one replies to other than saying thank you......)
I noticed many of other accounts in my niche gains a lot higher engagements in terms of likes and comments, which made me think if it is because I do not post personal pictures of myself?
