Facebook messenger - read feature

I sent a message in 2018. At one point it was marked as read.
Now, it doesn’t show as sent at all via the app. On my computer, it shows as sent. There is a time stamp at the bottom of message.
Is Facebook messengers read feature legit or not? Wondering if it’s accurate and if our messages are read half the time.
