Curating/reposting content for facebook page

Had a conversation with a facebook representative assigned as a point of contact for our facebook page (a news page with ~500k followers).
They cautioned (without looking at our page, just in general) against posting viral content, which surprised me because curating content has been 1) a recommendation of most social media strategy guides I have seen 2) performed very well for us (for 1-2 out of ~8 daily article and video posts) and 3) been facilitated by CrowdTangle, their own tool.
Nonetheless, she suggested that it could hurt us in the algorithm - though she also mentioned that we would likely have gotten a warning if we were doing this, which we haven't - and that pages with OC were strongly favored.
I'm often a little skeptical of facebook's advice, as I wonder if they really get what we do or are just kind of repeating talking points written with shoe companies or influencers that repost memes to try and build an audience in mind. But she seemed pretty confident in the warning so it gave me pause.
We usually repost three kinds of content: articles that are going viral on stories we don't have resources to cover ourselves, images and videos, with attribution whenever possible (along the lines of, say, a protestor giving an inspiring speech, or a really cool street mural) alongside a lot of original content (articles and videos).
I've stopped our curated content for the time being, but am curious what other people's experience has been, if there's certain kinds that should be avoided but not others, or whether they've read other stuff on this topic.
