If you could rewrite the post suggestion algorithm, what would you base it on? Or would you remove it?

Curious for thoughts on post suggestion algorithms.
Historically, social media platforms sorted your feed by what was most recently posted (i.e. New). Reddit still gives you the option, but platforms like Facebook, IG, and Twitter have all moved on to some proprietary post-suggestion algorithm to put highly-engaged content in your face.
Proponents for it say that it puts better content on your feed, which makes your experience more enjoyable.
Opponents say that it creates echo chambers, centralizing thought and limiting perspective. Or something not as philosophical - it washes out new creators trying to surface.
If you had the power to change the status quo, would you keep the algos, adjust them, or revert back to sorting by new by default?
