Sudden drop in impressions - how related are impressions and follower count?

On August 27th our Twitter impressions dropped drastically. (almost half) I've been trying to figure it out for a while now and suddenly hit me today that around that time we surpassed 2k followers. I double-checked and the dates match, we went from 1999 to 2000 followers on the same day impressions dropped.
I've thought the problem was 2-week hiatus we took in August but still it didn't make sense cause it ended on August 29th. So 27th was just a random day.
It kinda makes sense to me that follower count and the impressions would be related but this obvious much of an obvious change, I find weird. I was just wondering if anyone out there had similar issues and what are your takes on this.
