How does one obtain more "Friends" on Facebook?

I see people with thousands, and I have no more than 100...
How can I get more of them? Should I just blatantly add them if they appear on the "People you might know" list?
I'm asking beacuse having more "Friends" on Facebook can be useful beacuse: you get more potential real friends (you get to meet people), you get more people to give you feedback on your posts, you get to be ubiquitous (something that nowadays people seem to like: being famous regardless of what they achieved) and having more contacts can come in handy.
