Being a spectator to other people's lives on social media

I was thinking: There's a lot of talk about how social media affects our mental health, but I was thinking that it's more specifically the social media sites that promote passive "spectation". I find myself feeling more unhappy when I'm on Instagram as opposed to Reddit or Twitter where I take active part in creating content = tweeting, commenting, discussing etc. I think Youtube can do both, I find myself feeling unhappy when I see other people vlogging; showcasing their exciting and eventful lives, but when I watch documentaries on Youtube or cooking videos I feel like I'm at least adding something to MY life.

Has anyone else noticed this pattern? What do you think?
