Will people obsessed with social media ever realize that it‘s all fake and doing more harm than good?

Hey, so I‘ve always disliked instagram and co. Even in the early days when it wasn‘t so much about self presentation.
But nowadays it seems things have gotten worse and out of control. Every young girl and boy is glued into their screen 24/7.
I am only 19 myself yet I seem to be disliked/ not one of the „cool kids“ because I don‘t have the same hair as every second guy, wear expensive clothes etc. For those kinds of people all that matters is being able to buy a benz.
I live in central europe and can‘t speak for the rest of this world but when I see stuff like this on the daily and girls only presenting their body on instagram, all looking the same almost like plastic dolls. It makes me really scared for the future.
I don‘t fit in with those kinds of people and honestly I don‘t know a single guy or girl in my towns and the neighboring towns (all with about 20‘000 inhabitants who isn‘t like this.
they all have the same haircut, want the same things (money and sex) yet on social media they post on how they „just want to fall in love“
Well let me tell you something dear looking like a barbie doll and being obsessed with materialism won‘t help that.
I don‘t consider myself religious but kind of spiritual and the buddhist concepts make sense to me.
Yet I have no idea how to live with the fact that my whole generation are smartphone addicts and basically controlled by all these companies like zombies. Then they wonder why they are depressed. What worries me even more is looking at the younger generation, cause my generation got introduced to social media at about age 12.
Nowadays 8 year old girls are already on social media and have the newest I phone. It really scares me and I don‘t really know what to do. I want to find likeminded people but it seems impossible in this world. That‘s my only problem, that I‘m lonely.
But no matter how lonely I get I‘ll never buy into this materialistic illusion again.
