Facebook not sending new event notification to followers

We recently created an event and none of our 5k followers got a notification about it. I've had issues with FB not always sending notifications for posts on our page or event, but never for a new event. We ended up canceling the event due to this issue and another unrelated issue with the date.
We'd like to figure out how to avoid this going forward because without our followers hearing about the event it's very hard to spread the word organically. The most frustrating part was our post to hype up the announcement the day before the event got a notification and 200 likes, lots of comments, much more than our posts typically get, then no love from facebook fro the actual event posting.
