Facebook is so frustrating with random friend notifications.

I don't know if anyone else is getting this, but I keep getting notifications from friends such as xx updated their status / xxx added a photo. It's so intrusive! I even get odd emails here and there telling me these things. I disabled close friend notifications as soon as this started happening, but it continues. Do I need to go through each friend and make them a close friend in order for this to stop? Why does Facebook think I care about random friends' statuses?
