First task as a social media manager is promoting a large, global event. I don't know where to start.

So I recently got hired as a social media manager for a tech company. Well I got hired about a month ago, but the team and my boss have been extremely busy until now. I am the only one doing social media/ marketing for the company. This week will be my first week.
I got an email from my boss saying we will be working closely over the next couple of weeks to get me started. She said the focus at my start will be a large global event that is in February. She also mentioned that they will be super busy getting the event ready and will need substantial help on the marketing side.
The company has accounts on LinkedIn and Twitter. There is also an account for the event its self, as this is the second year it is happening. All the accounts have been inactive for about 3 months as they fired their marketing consultant in favor of hiring me as their in-house social media manager.
This is my first task and I would really like to get off to a good start. I'm sure I will learn more about the needs of the company and what my focuses should be for marketing the event when I speak to my boss tomorrow.
Does anyone have any suggestions for where I should start to ensure the event's marketing is a success? I was also making a list of questions I should ask her when we talk. I would like to learn more about the target audience and what she would like from my marketing. Can you think of any other specifics I should enquire about?
