Websleuths - how can I find someone's social media with just a profile pic?

NOT asking for creeper reasons! I've lost touch with an online mate who is having a bad time, his first name is common and I don't have his surname, just pics. None show up in any of the reverse image search clients so it's proving really hard to just check if he's still alive. Anyone better at social sleuthing than me, please help...
