Georgina Chapman Speaks Out
Georgina Chapman, co-founder of Marchesa alongside Keren Craig, spoke out about the sexual assault allegations against her estranged husband Harvey Weinstein for the first time in an exclusive interview with Vogue. Over 100 accusations of sexual assault have been levied against producer Weinstein since October of last year. “There was a part of me that was terribly naive—clearly, so naive. I have moments of rage, I have moments of confusion, I have moments of disbelief! And I have moments when I just cry for my children. What are their lives going to be?” said Chapman to Vogue. The interview came out soon after Scarlett Johansson received backlash for wearing a Marchesa gown to the Met Gala, as the label has been blacklisted by celebrities since the Weinstein scandal surfaced. Many have come to support of the actress and designer, including Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. “Georgina is a brilliant designer, and I don’t think that she should be blamed for her husband’s behavior,” said Wintour in an interview with Stephen Colbert, “I think it was a great gesture of support on Scarlett’s part to wear a beautiful dress like that on such a public occasion.”
Prabal Gurung Announces Made-to-Measure Line
Not only did the Met Gala boast the return of Marchesa, it also was where designer Prabal Gurung announced the release of his Atelier. The gowns that accompanied the designer that night will make up the first collection for the made-to-measure line, which is available for pre-order until May 29. “I thought it was the perfect time to really talk about what we stand for; what we stand for, and what we do besides the ready-to-wear, is this incredibly high-end, uncompromised, considered clothing for a woman who has places like this to go to,” Gurung told Fashionista. “I thought the Met Gala was the perfect place to have this be launched because it’s fashion’s biggest playground.”
Gucci Goes DIY
The luxury brand announced its new online service, #GucciDIY, where shoppers can customize both the Ophidia tote and sneakers with their initials. There are a total of 15 possible customizations for up to two initials for each item. Buyers can choose between two sizes of the Ophidia tote, large and maxi, which is made with the brands iconic GG logo fabric and a brown leather trim. The label has elevated the trend of subtle monogramming to making the initials themselves the focal point of the piece.
Burberry Sues Target
Target is the latest brand to be sued by Burberry for a variety of products that infringe on their trademark checks in a lawsuit filed on May 2. The iconic UK label tartan has become synonymous with the brand since the 1920s, which is why they are asking for Target to stop all production of future infringing products as well the recall of all existing products in question. Furthermore, they are seeking $2 million in damages as well as the coverage of their court cost. This is the newest course of action for Burberry against Target, which started with a cease-and-desist being sent in early 2017. Target is the third brand to receive legal repercussions from Burberry, with JCPenney and Body Glove both being accused of product infringement.
