It wasn’t a stand out sister or grumpy flower girl who stole the royal wedding spotlight this morning. In an unexpected twist, Bishop Michael Curry of Chicago became the person everyone was frantically typing into their Google search bars as they tuned in to watch Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tie the knot.

Markle is, of course, one of the first mixed-race members of the monarchy—and the royal wedding didn’t shy away from celebrating the significance of her heritage. With power and passion, Bishop Curry addressed the history of slavery and quoted Martin Luther King. And, in a break from the stiff pomp and pageantry, he made references to Instagram and cracked light hearted jokes. A modern sermon, for our modern couple.

“When you are loved and you know it, when you love and you show it, it actually feels right, there’s something right about it,” he preached. “And there’s a reason for it, we were made by a power of love and our lives are meant to be lived in that love. That’s why we are here.” Pointing to Harry and Meghan, he then said: “Two young people fell in love and we all showed up.”

Not everyone in the pews was expecting such an energetic, moving performance in the St. George Chapel this morning. Their reactions? Priceless. We’d like to formally welcome the royal family into 2018.
