The collapse of societies was studied in Calhoun's experiment on mice under utopic conditions. It was a study on overpopulation essentially. The result was extinction. The mice never leveled off and returned to a functional colony. And when mice were removed from the overcrowding, they remained dysfunctional. Many interesting traits emerged, such as tribalism and violence.
This post goes into the comparisons of the experiment to the culture on Facebook. It also discusses possibly dangerous tribes that are emerging, under the guise of innocent morality. Conspiracy is mentioned towards the end.
